she may be borderline overdramatic and sometimes over-the-top, but it is undeniable that her performance complements and contrast that of JAVIER BARDEM.
in my eyes, she gave the breakthrough performance of the year portraying a woman torn by mental disorders and psychological diseases without falling into any clichés.
MARICEL approaches the character with honesty avoiding the usual portrayal of the unstable wife and dodging that sick wife stereotype.
MARICEL therefore gives the character that third dimension that makes you empathize with this women without going too far as to victimize her.
in a SCENE: stumbling into JAVIER BARDEM in the street and telling him how much she loves him; runner-ups: her opening sex scene and the couch-out-of-the-window conversations.
