most of the time great performances come from characters faced with desperate times and desperate measures, in this case it is the depth she finds and gives to this very ordinary character that make her worth of the title of best supporting actress in 2010.
that film shows a bunch of caring people but she isn’t one of those, she plays one of the most obnoxious characters but she never goes as far as to make her a cartoonish villain or a stereotypical bitch.
without any criticism or any judgment she portrays the raw unbearable character and makes it not just bearable but actually empathizing.
AMANDA is the breakthrough performer of the year because she pleasantly and positively surprised us by portraying an awful woman with honesty.
AMANDA is the supporting actress of the year because she managed to play a very unlikable character without making us victimize her instead comprehending and understanding her.
in a SCENE: after her grandmother dies she [pretty much] insults the neighbors but under her skin she shows how much she really cared for her even though she never showed it.

in an ensemble as great as the one in this film, she has been somehow dismissed as just another very good performance that looked easy and has little value, but that’s wrong in both accounts.
behind the old woman we see on screen, she portrays a character full of wisdom and with a lifetime of caring and working hard for others that doesn’t want to be a load in anyone’s back.
behind the old woman we see on screen, she is the loving person worried about the granddaughters she had no choice but gladly raised choosing not to show strong feelings toward them.
ANN’s conscious independence might be confused with senile insanity, but we know that behind every inappropriate and uncomfortable comment there’s a woman trying to live a peaceful end to her long life.
in a SCENE: that trip to the forest with her granddaughter [played by REBECCA HALL] where we clearly see her inappropriate comments are obvious hints for that granddaughter to go on with her life.

2010.alejandro GONZALEZ-IÑARRITU
she may be borderline overdramatic and sometimes over-the-top, but it is undeniable that her performance complements and contrast that of JAVIER BARDEM.
in my eyes, she gave the breakthrough performance of the year portraying a woman torn by mental disorders and psychological diseases without falling into any clichés.
MARICEL approaches the character with honesty avoiding the usual portrayal of the unstable wife and dodging that sick wife stereotype.
MARICEL therefore gives the character that third dimension that makes you empathize with this women without going too far as to victimize her.
in a SCENE: stumbling into JAVIER BARDEM in the street and telling him how much she loves him; runner-ups: her opening sex scene and the couch-out-of-the-window conversations.

COLOMBIA’s foreign language picture submission for the 2010 race not only gave us incredible cinematography and production design but discovered this amazing child actress.
she is not shy in front of that camera, never even doubting to rely on her natural abilities and completely going with her instincts and her talents.
YISELA steals that film, she is the only link between the lead and the town he is visiting, therefore she is most time on-screen becoming the most memorable thing within the movie.
YISELA is so fresh and makes that performance look so easy that it is hard to truly know where the actor ends and the person begins.
in a SCENE: LUCÍA helps the main lead [with whom she shares amazing chemistry] escape the town giving off her dreams and hopes.
